Welcome to the Chemistry
104 website!
The purpose of this course is to
learn chemistry in the context of its real-world applications. Among many
other topics, atomic structure will be taught in the context of how
electromagnetic radiation can both induce and cure cancer. Other issues
related to atomic structure and radiation, such as the dangers of radon
exposure and how nuclear fusion works, will also be covered. Polymers
will be introduced through discussions of your everyday plastics and
proteins, so that you can see the varied nature and composition of
polymers, and also how prevalent they are. The concepts of interaction of
light with matter and free radicals will be taught with discussions
relating to atmospheric pollution and UV radiation.
”Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” In Chemistry 108 we know
that, if you put in the required time and effort, then you will have a
worthwhile learning experience. Whether you are a doctor, nurse,
scientist, journalist, or politician, there is always one constant theme:
teamwork. You will find that prominent figures in all areas of life will
always have an incredible supporting staff. Chemistry 108 is no
different. Use your peers as your support. We encourage you to build on
each other’s knowledge and strengths by getting together to help
understand difficult concepts and to work on textbook problems.
