No matter what
the character of uniting atoms may be, the combining power of an attracting
element always will be satisfied by the same number of these atoms.
For instance, if the element M combines with the elements H and Cl, the same number of H and/or Cl atoms will be used. As an example, if the valence of M is 4, one might expect to find:
