Ions were themselves a revolutionary topic in the 1890's. In his 1883 PhD thesis, Arrhenius had introduced the theory of ionization in solution. The existence of charged ions in solution was not univerally popular and many chemists did not accept the idea.

and Jørgensen's theories speak of "outer sphere" and "reactive" groups.
These groups are loosely held and are more chemically reactive
than the other groups. Loosely held chlorines, for instance will
react with silver, forming solid AgCl.
Jørgensen thinks that the loosely held groups are attached to the ammonia chains. Werner thinks that the loosely held groups are bound electrostatically to the complex ion and form ions when the compound is dissolved. |
