A class of compounds that interested inorganic chemists at this time was called the "metal ammines", compounds of a metal with ammonia and other elements or molecules. Berzelius made an attempt to describe the structures of these compounds in 1841 and others followed. One of the more successful theories was the chain theory introduced by Blomstrand in 1869 and extended by Jørgensen in later years.
