Determination of Neutralizing Capacity of Antacids

Description: Milk of Magnesia is added to water along with an indicator to show that the solution is basic. The solution will turn yellow following addition of hydrochloric acid, but will return to blue when the mixture is stirred. The amount of acid needed to neutralize the antacid can be quanititated through titration or by measuring the amount of acid added with graduated cylinders.
