Activity 1

This activity is expected to help students:
  • meet other students in their class
  • exchange email addresses with classmates
  • become familiar with the web report forms
  • become familiar with a web browser
  • consider significant figures when estimating
  • recognize that quantities reported on the web have uncertainty associated with them
  • begin to think about how to assess accuracy

The Activity

1. Meet with at least two classmates, share your email addresses, and discuss how many miles it is from your chemistry classroom to your state capitol. You should each make an estimate of the distance in miles. Record your estimates .

2. Use one of the Mapping Web Sites to determine the distance (in miles) it is from your chemistry classroom to your state capitol. (Note: You will need to know the street address for both buildings.)

3. Discuss the uncertainty in your estimate and the distance reported by the web site and be prepared to discuss how accurate your estimate was.

4. Once you have finished your discussions, select a reporter. The reporter should fill out the report form for this assignment, print out the report, get signatures from each member of the group on the report, and turn the report in for grading.
