A complex ion is an ion with several molecules or ions connected to a central metal ion. Some examples are [NiCl4]2-, Fe(CN)6]3-, and [Ag(NH3)2]+. The molecules or ions that are connected to the metal are called ligands. They are bonded to the metal through coordinate covalent bonds (bonds in which one atom contributes both electrons for the shared pair). |
