Copper sulfate
is CuSO4. According to Dualism, Cu and S, both of which are more
positive than O, are attracted
to and held by the negative oxygen.
Cu+ + O- ------> CuO
S+ + 3O- ------> SO3
The charges of the elements don't cancel so the two products,
CuO and SO3, remain slightly charged. These two residually charged
pieces attract each other to form the final product
CuO + SO3 ------> CuO·SO3
Dualistic theory was formulated by Berzelius as
an outgrowth of electrochemistry. It works well for compounds
such as salts and
minerals.
