Organic Nomenclature consists of a series of multiple-choice questions on naming simple organic compounds and drawing structures consisting of multiple-choice questions. Selecting a Question To see questions pertaining to a specific class of compounds (for example alcohols, alkines, amines, etc.), click Main Menu and then click the name of one of the classes of compounds listed. Click Pop Quiz to have the computer select a question at random from among the 260 compounds available. Answering a Question On a question page, first determine what you think is the correct answer by working with a pencil and paper, and then select your answer from the list by clicking it. If you are correct, you will be congratulated. If you are not correct, a hint will be provided to help you select the correct answer. The hint may not address all of the errors in an incorrect answer. Getting Help Click Reminders in the upper menu on the left for some general information about the class of compound you are working with that could tell you how to name it, or how to draw its structure. The hint will appear in a new browser window. For another hint about this class of compounds, click Another Hint. To return to your place in Organic Nomenclature, click Return to Question. Additional help is available from the Help Menu. Click Instructions to return to this page to see general instructions for using Organic Nomenclature. Click Common Names to see the common names of several functional groups and molecules. The information will appear in a new browser window. To return to your place in Organic Nomenclature, close the new browser window. Click Prefixes and Suffixes to see a list of prefixes and suffixes used in both the common and IUPAC names of organic compounds. The information will appear in a new browser window. To return to your place in Organic Nomenclature, close the new browser window. Click Basic Rules to see a list of basic rules for naming organic compounds. The information will appear in a new browser window. To return to your place in Organic Nomenclature, close the new browser window. Click Stem Names to see a list describing he naming of the trunk or the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms in the molecule. The information will appear in a new browser window. To return to your place in Organic Nomenclature, close the new browser window. Exiting Organic Nomenclature You can exit Organic Nomenclature at any time by exiting the browser program. Or, if you wish to continue using the browser, simply direct the browser to the desired location. |
