This simulation begins in the period around 1870 when chemistry is beginning to be organized. The concept, introduced by Kekulé and Couper, of tetravalent carbon atoms capable of linking to each other has permitted the rise of structural concepts in organic chemistry. The ability to formulate consistent and reasonable molecular structures for organic compounds is leading to rapid progress in that field.

Inorganic chemistry, on the other hand, still is in a confused state because the molecular structures of inorganic compounds still are not clear.

Friedrich August Kekulé
(1829 - 1896)
