Using a Standard Bulb

Video. Drawing in liquid into a Mohr pipet with standard pipet bulb.

  1. Make sure there is enough liquid in a beaker or other container to completely fill the pipet. (NEVER pipet directly from a reagent bottle or volumetric flask.)

  2. Place the tip of the pipet below the liquid's surface. DO NOT force the bulb onto the end of the pipet!

  3. Squeeze the bulb.

  4. With gentle pressure, place the silicone attachment of the bulb over the mouth of the pipet. DO NOT force the bulb onto the mouth of the pipet, but apply constant, gentle pressure to maintain a seal between the bulb and the pipet.

  5. Gradually release the presure on the bulb and allow the liquid to be drawn into the pipet. Draw more liquid than needed, but DO NOT ALLOW THE LIQUID TO ENTER THE BULB.

  6. With the tip of the pipet still below the liquid's surface, quickly remove the bulb and place your finger or thumb over the mouth of the pipet to prevent the solution from draining back into the container. If the volume drawn into the pipet is not sufficient, squeeze the bulb and draw more liquid into the pipet.

  7. NEVER use a bulb to blow out the liquid remaining in a pipet unless instructed to do so.
