Oxidation Number
The OXIDATION NUMBER tells us how the number of eectrons differs from that in the pure compound.
We will use the oxidation number to help us keep track of the gain and loss of electrons in chemical reactions.
The oxidation number of a pure element is zero.
The oxidation number of hydrogen in H2 is zero.
The oxidation number of Li is 0 and the oxidation number of Li+ is +1.
The oxidation number of Cl is 0 and the oxidation number of Cl- is -1.
