In the CaCu₅ structure, the Cu atoms form trigonal bipyramidal units which share corners in two directions to make a honeycomb layer, which then join with each other through corner-sharing along the third direction. The result is an open framework with big spaces for the Ca atoms, which trace out a primitive hexagonal network.
