Like the orthorhombic family, the monoclinic family has no restraints on the lattice parameter lengths, but in addition, monoclinic cells also allow one of the cell angles to deviate from 90 degrees. This unique angle is conventionally assigned to be beta. Monoclinic cells are indexed so that the beta angle is obtuse, or greater than 90 degrees.
