Unloading a Centrifuge

Video. Suspending the solid upon removal.

Once the centrifuge has come to a complete stop, carefully remove the sample from the centrifuge so that the solid is not re-suspended in the solution. Note the appearance of the mixture. If the solid has not completely been separated from the solution (if the solid is still suspended in the solution), place the sample back in the centrifuge and repeat the centrifuging process.

Video. Self Check video.

checkWhat should the student in the video do next? Answer

Centrifuge the sample again, and allow the centrifuge to stop gradually.

The student will not be able to decant the supernatant without removing a portion of the solid, since the solid became dispersed into the solution when the centrifuge was stopped suddenly.
