In the s'mores example, 32 s'mores could be made. (If you have not read the s'mores example, click on the s'more on the left) Suppose at the end of your cookout, you realize that only 25 s'mores were actually made. There could be a variety reasons for this - not all of the ingredients were used (so there would be chocolate left over), some of the ingredients could have been used in other ways (your friend may have eaten a piece of chocolate), etc.
In this example, the number of s'mores you should have been able to make given the supply of your ingredients is the theoretical yield. The number you actually made is the actual yield. The ratio of the actual yield to the theoretical yield (multiplied by 100%) is the percent yield:
