When two polyhedra share two neighboring vertices, they also share an edge. This is referred to as edge-sharing. Each shared edge reduces the number of atoms needed to build the structure by two. If the polyhedra have atoms at their centers, edge-sharing will bring those central atoms closer to each other than would be required with only a single shared vertex.
